Week 15

The liberal arts were historically divided into the

  1. the trivium, which focused on the proper use of language. It was subdivided into
    • grammar
    • logic, and
    • rhetoric,
  2. the quadrivium, which focused on the mathematical structure of the cosmos. It was subdivided into
    • arithmetic
    • geometry
    • music
    • astronomy

Today in LAS 101, we will look at Chapter 5 of Stratford Caldecott's book Beauty for Truth's Sake. This chapter focuses on the connection between music and mathematics.

Here is a nice 18 minute video on How Pythagoras Broke Music—and how we kind of fixed it.

You can still hand in your General Education paper until Wednesday of this week. Your final Liberal Arts Synthesis paper is due at the end of next week.
